Sustainability
We work with sustainability in several areas:
1. Waste:
We have written information about waste sorting for our customers and guests.
The waste bins in our holiday homes and farm shop are labeled with information in several languages.
2. Water:
We have a goal to collect rainwater from the roofs to be used for irrigation in our self-picking garden.
We use a lot of water to wash our vegetables. We will work on collecting this water and reusing it for watering in the pick-your-own garden.
3. Construction:
When building and landscaping, we aim to use recycled or locally produced materials. As an example, we have chosen oak from a nearby forest and sawmill for the terrace of one of our vacation apartments. All doors in our newly built rental apartment are recycled doors.
4. Packaging:
Paper packaging is used either to pack goods for our customers or as weed cover in our vegetable beds.
We make jam, which is sold in the farm shop. Our local customers often return with empty jars, which we then reuse.
We encourage customers to bring their own bowl or basket when picking berries and vegetables. This way, unnecessary packaging is avoided.
5. The pick-your-own garden:
We try to grow the quantities of berries and vegetables that we expect to be able to sell directly to consumers. We prefer to sell via pick-your-own, as this results in the least amount of waste and thus reduces food waste.
The products we produce in excess are picked and sold to canteens. We pick the surplus berries and use them to make jam and ice cream. These are sold in the farm shop.
We grow everything without the use of pesticides or artificial fertilizers. We use compost and chicken and horse manure. We sow soil-improving crops after harvest to nourish the soil. We minimize weed pressure by laying mulch and weeding in the traditional way.
We have been approved as a "Slowfood Farm," which is an NGO that works for good, clean, and fair food for all.
6. Transportation:
We sell a few local products in our farm shop in addition to our own. We have chosen to do this in order to minimize transport.
